AI Activities for Kids: The Perfect Solution for the Half-Term Break. While the kids are over the moon, I’m already feeling a tad exhausted. Having both kids home while I still need to work from home is going to be a challenge. 

Picture this: I’m trying to finish Invoicing or video editing while one child is creating a ‘masterpiece’ on the sofa or her own body, and the other is loudly practicing His singing skills. Fun times, right? 

But fear not, fellow parents! AI has been our saving grace in the last few months, and I have high hopes it will come through for us again. From asking Alexa to play calming music to getting ChatGPT to entertain the kids with interactive stories, there are plenty of tech tools to help keep our sanity intact. 

Let’s dive into how we can integrate AI activities for kids and keep our little ones engaged and maybe even sneak in some learning during this half-term. Because let’s face it, We all need a bit of a digital assistant these days!

Embracing Technology (Even When It’s Not Perfect)

I’ll be honest, I’ve always been quite against digital devices for kids and preferred other types of entertainment. But let’s face it, I’m not the perfect parent with millions of indoor and outdoor activity ideas. I’m human, and I work from home. 

So, for my mental sanity, I must rely on technology more often than I’d like. However, I don’t feel too bad about it because We use alternatives that are not just about watching tablets or TV. Tools like ChatGPT and Alexa can be both entertaining and educational.

I even integrate school homework into these activities in a fun way so my son can practice reading, spelling, and math, or even prepare quizzes about their current term topics. So, nope, not feeling that bad! And you, mummy, or daddy, you do what you can. If it helps maintain the family’s sanity, then it’s a good thing!

Benefits of Using AI Activities for Kids

Organising a Morning Schedule for Kids with ChatGPT

To organise a structured morning schedule for your kids, We can transfer the activity details to ChatGPT. Using a framework like RISE (Role, Input, Steps, Expectation) can help ensure clarity and efficiency. Frameworks like these provide a structured approach to crafting prompts, ensuring that all necessary details are communicated effectively to ChatGPT. This not only streamlines the process but also improves the accuracy and relevance of the output.

Step 1: Define the Activities

We’ve already listed and timed the morning activities: RISE framework example.

Role: You are my virtual assistant.

Input: Create a detailed schedule for my kids activities from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with specific timings for each activity.

Steps:

Provide a List of activities you want to include during the day:

Step 2. Schedule Flexibility and Adjustments

It’s important to note that the schedule can be amended according to each family’s specific needs. For example, since I need the morning for work, I will shift the walk to the afternoon. This way, I can blend this time with sports time, allowing us to go out with the bike, visit the park, go swimming, or take a long walk.

On rainy days, when going outside isn’t possible, We can extend the periods of each indoor activity or combine multiple activities into one long session. For instance, We can blend reading, creative, and educational activities into a single morning activity. With the help of ChatGPT, kids can create a great mixed activity.

– Here’s an example prompt to ask ChatGPT to adjust the schedule:

Prompt: “Hi ChatGPT, please adjust the kids activity schedule. Since I need the morning for work, move the outdoor walk to the afternoon and combine it with sports time. For rainy days, extend indoor activities or create a long-mixed activity session combining reading, creative, and educational activities for the whole morning. Please suggest new timings accordingly.”

Below is ChatGPT’s response.

As you just watched, this prompt will guide ChatGPT to create two versions of our kids activity schedule. One version will be for sunny days, moving the outdoor walk to the afternoon and combining it with sports time. 

The other version will be for rainy days, extending indoor activities and creating a long-mixed activity session that combines reading, creative, and educational activities for the entire morning. 

These plans will ensure the schedules are engaging, educational, and well-balanced, accommodating different weather conditions to guarantee a productive and enjoyable day for the kids

Step 3. Transferring Reminder Commands to Alexa

Using Voice Commands

Wake Alexa: Start by saying, “Alexa, set a reminder.”

Specify the Reminder: Clearly state the activity and the time. For example, “Alexa, remind me at 9:00 AM to start reading time.”

Confirmation: Alexa will confirm the reminder and store it for you.

“Alexa, set a reminder for breakfast at 8:00 AM.”

“Alexa, remind me at 10:00 AM for creative activity time.”

“Alexa, set a reminder at 1:00 PM for lunch.”

“Alexa, remind me at 2:00 PM for outdoor walk and sports.”

Using the Alexa App

Open the Alexa App: Launch the Alexa app on your mobile device.

Navigate to Reminders:

One of the most engaging activities you can do with your kids on a rainy day is creating stories using ChatGPT and DALL-E. As I mentioned earlier in the post.

Here’s how you can do it:

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Generate Story Prompts

Encourage your kids to come up with imaginative story ideas. For example, “a brave knight named Arya who saves a magical forest from an evil dragon.”

Step 2: Create the Story with ChatGPT

Use the RISE framework to guide the creation of the story. It’s important to keep communicating with ChatGPT, providing more ideas about the story until it is completed.

Role: Storyteller

Input: Story ideas and characters provided by kids

Steps:

1.     Create a story about a brave knight named Arya who saves a magical forest from an evil dragon. Include a wise old owl and a mischievous fairy as her friends.

2.     Keep adding details or changing elements based on kids imagination.

3.     Once all ideas are incorporated, compile the ideas into a full story with approximately 1000 words.

Expectation: A story about a brave knight named Arya facing adventures will be provided in a concise and fun way for a 6-year-old child not exceeding 1000 words.

Step 3: Create Illustrations with DALL-E

After the story is written, use DALL-E to generate illustrations for different scenes in the story.

How to Find DALL-E in GPT:

-Open the ChatGPT interface.

-Ask ChatGPT to generate images using DALL-E by providing a description of the scene you want illustrated.

Example Prompt:

Create an illustration of the brave knight named Arya standing in a magical forest with her friends, the wise old owl, and the mischievous fairy. Use vibrant and magical scenario.

Step 4: Compile the Story into a Word Document

Ask ChatGPT to organise the story into sections with appropriate headings and placeholders for illustrations.

Example Prompt:

Format the story into a Word document layout with appropriate headings, chapters, and placeholders for illustrations. Include sections for a title page, chapters, and illustration placeholders.

Step 5: Print and Craft the Book

Once you have the Word document, change font colours, typography, and sizes to make it even more magical. Kids can cut parts of sentences and create their own versions by pasting into the cardboards or new blank page

My Experience with Alexa’s Fart Skill, LOL

I once activated the Fart Skill on Alexa for my son and his friend, and they couldn’t stop laughing. However, be careful! Alexa went crazy, and even when I was working later, she would respond with farts no matter how many times I asked her to stop. Naughty Alexa!
